What to do and see in Palermo

Born under the name Zyz, which mean Flower, the city of Palermo is now to be a worthy representative of the entire sicilian beauty that many have not yet had the pleasure to (re)discover.

1TEATRO MASSIMO 

If you love theater, go immediately in Piazza Giuseppe Verdi and let yourself be surprised by the largest theatrical structure at national level and the third largest after the Paris Opera and the Vienna Staadtsoper.

Known worldwide especially for the impeccable acoustics inside his room in the shape of a “horseshoe”, was created to accommodate 3,000 visitors, despite today, according to the safety regulations, the number has been decreased to 1300.

Are you curious to climb the stairway to the sides which there are two majestic bronze lions and discover this structure with your eyes?

2THE FOUR MARKETS 

Capo (behind Teatro Massimo), Ballarò (near Central Station), Vucciria (not far from the Cathedral) and Borgo Vecchio (not far from the port), represent the Palermo where time forgot to slide.

It is precisely the ruined palaces and the ancient walls as a backdrop to each of them, almost as if the city itself wanted to welcome you to a piece of history, gradually leading you in the traditions and in those that are already present in the same markets past centuries in the exact ways in which we can still admire them.

3CATHEDRAL OF THE HOLY VIRGIN MARY ASSUNTA

And once outside the Vucciria, why not take a leap and go to admire the Cathedral from the tormented history?

It was built for the first time around the IV century, but vandals destroyed it and the first building we did not get anything.

In 604 it was decided then to dedicate to the Virgin Mary of the Assumption a new temple, but also what was destroyed, leaving, however, this time, only a crypt; but you know that the third time is always good, so in the last two decades of the 1100s, at the request of the Archbishop Offamilio, was born the Cathedral "final", that due to force majeure was repeatedly subjected to restorations and even if the 'interior was not preserved as it was originally created, the building remains, to this day, one of those places where you cannot miss to visit if you pass through Palermo;

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4THE CUISINE

 Whatever anyone says, Italy (and Sicily in particular), in the kitchen is unbeatable!

But if you really do not feel like wasting time going to the restaurant, do not buy yourself a classic sandwich with ham at the supermarket, and you dare to eat for a day by real palermitano!

5FONTANA DI PRETORIA - FOUNTAIN PRETORIA

"Why should I go see a fountain?" - Well ', if you're wondering, suffice it to say that in 1500 was commissioned by Don Luigi di Toledo, but in Florence; it was only a few years later, when it was learned that the owner had contracted numerous debts, the Senate in Palermo decided to buy it.

6MUSEUM ANTONIO PASQUALINO

This museum takes its name from a surgeon who throughout his life he devoted himself to a theatrical form that seemed destined to become extinct: the work of Puppets.

Wooden puppets, variously decorated, a little less than a meter high and difficult to maneuver.

This work has been regarded as important by UNESCO to be the first Italian opera inserted between the Oral and Intangible Heritage of humanity; and it is thanks to museums like the one mentioned above, which is given to all the opportunity to see these works of art up close.

When? Every day:

Monday through Friday from 09.00 to 13.00 and from 16.00 to 19.00, Saturday only from 09.00 to 13.00 and Sunday from 10.00 to 13.00;
